Boxed Cushion Cover Material Calculator
Imagine you have a boxed cushion with a top & Bottom (length and width) and sides (depth). To cover the cushion, you need extra fabric for the seam (where the fabric is stitched together) and to wrap around the edges.
- For the width of the material:
You take the cushion’s width, add a little extra on each side for the seam, and then add the cushion’s depth (to cover one side of the cushion). So, it’s like laying out the fabric to cover the front of the cushion plus the extra seams. - For the length of the material:
You need enough fabric to cover both the top and the bottom parts of the cushion. Therefore, you double the cushion’s length. Then, you add extra for the seams on the top and bottom and also extra for the two sides (depths) that wrap around.
So, for a cushion that’s 22″ long, 22″ wide, and 5″ deep with a ½” seam allowance, you end up needing a piece of fabric that’s 28″ wide and 55″ long. This ensures that when you sew all the parts together, the cushion is well-covered, and there’s enough fabric for the seams.
